Let's be honest about "longevity" products. There's a lot of hype out there, and anyone promising to turn back the clock isn't being straight with you. But one ingredient keeps coming up in serious conversations about healthy aging, and it's showing up more and more in questions from guests across Newport, Covington, and Cincinnati: Niagen®.
This guide explains why, what the research supports, and where clinician-guided Niagen therapy at Prime IV Newport fits (and where it doesn't).
The Molecule Behind the Buzz
NAD+ is a coenzyme your cells rely on for energy metabolism and normal cellular maintenance. Researchers studying human skin samples have reported that NAD+ levels tend to be lower with age [1]. That finding sparked a wave of research into whether boosting NAD+ might support healthy aging.
Where Niagen® Comes In
Niagen® is the branded form of nicotinamide riboside (NR), a type of vitamin B3. Your body converts NR into NAD+. It's one of the most studied NAD+ precursors in humans, with multiple published clinical trials [2–6].
What Clinical Trials Show (and Don't)
What looks consistent:
- NR raises NAD+ levels in humans in a dose-dependent way [2,4].
- It was well tolerated in healthy middle-aged and older adults in a six-week trial [3] and in an eight-week randomized trial [4].
What's promising but early:
- In men aged 70–80, NR raised NAD+-related metabolites in muscle and was linked with reduced levels of some inflammatory markers [5].
What didn't pan out:
- In men with obesity, 12 weeks of NR didn't improve insulin sensitivity [6].
That's the real picture: a well-tolerated way to raise NAD+, with longer-term outcome research still underway. Most trials studied oral NR; research on IV and injected forms is more limited.
Why Adults Over 50 Are Interested
Long Northern Kentucky winters, busy careers, and caring for both kids and aging parents can wear people down. Many guests over 50 tell us they're looking for ways to support energy and resilience as part of a bigger plan: strength training, sleep, good nutrition, and regular checkups.
Our Niagen® IV and Injection Series
At Prime IV Newport, you can choose:
- Niagen® IV infusions: delivered in our VIP zero-gravity massage chairs.
- Niagen® injections: a quick option between work and errands.
- Series programs: a planned sequence of visits for consistency.
Every visit starts with a free wellness consultation with our medical team to determine what's appropriate for your health history and goals.
What the Numbers Actually Look Like
Here's a closer, more detailed look at the five human trials, because the details matter:
Trammell et al., 2016 [2].Twelve healthy adults took single doses of 100, 300, or 1,000 mg of NR. Blood NAD+-related compounds rose in a dose-dependent way. The study also included a pilot with one person; on its own, that's an anecdote, not evidence.
Martens et al., 2018 [3]. Thirty healthy adults aged 55–79 took 1,000 mg/day for six weeks in a crossover design. NR was well tolerated, and NAD+ in blood cells was about 60% higher than with placebo. The authors flagged blood pressure and arterial stiffness as questions for future trials, not proven effects.
Conze et al., 2019 [4].In 140 healthy overweight adults, eight weeks of 100, 300, or 1,000 mg/day raised whole-blood NAD+ by 22%, 51%, and 142%, respectively. Adverse events didn't differ from placebo, and no flushing was reported.
Elhassan et al., 2019 [5].Twelve men aged 70–80 took 1,000 mg/day for 21 days. NR raised NAD+-related compounds in muscle and reduced some circulating inflammatory cytokines, but it didn't change muscle mitochondrial bioenergetics.
Dollerup et al., 2018 [6].Forty men with obesity, aged 40–70, took 2,000 mg/day for 12 weeks. It appeared safe but didn't improve insulin sensitivity or body composition.
That's a balanced picture: good evidence that NR raises NAD+ and is well tolerated in these studies, and limited evidence so far on long-term outcomes.
The Northern Kentucky Winter Factor
Winter in the Cincinnati area means short days, gray skies, and a lot of time indoors. Many guests over 50 tell us that's when they feel least like themselves. Niagen isn't a fix for the winter blues, and if you're struggling with mood or energy, start with your doctor. But winter is a smart time to rebuild habits that support how you feel:
- Get daylight early. A morning walk on the Newport Riverwalk or Purple People Bridge counts.
- Keep strength training. Muscle is one of the best investments you can make after 50.
- Watch the holiday alcohol. It can affect sleep and hydration.
- Hydrate indoors. Dry, heated air makes it easy to forget to drink.
- Book your annual physical. Labs can rule out common causes of fatigue.
How a Niagen® Series Works at Prime IV Newport
- Free wellness consultation. We review your health history, medications, and goals.
- Choose your format. IV infusion in our zero-gravity massage chairs, or a quick injection.
- Plan your series.Consistency matters, so we'll map out your visits in advance.

Who Should Check With a Doctor First
Niagen may not be appropriate for everyone. Talk with your physician before starting if you are pregnant or nursing, are being treated for cancer, have kidney or liver disease or a heart condition, or take multiple prescription medications. Bring a complete list of your medications and supplements to your free consultation. Our team will review it carefully and may recommend that you check with your doctor before your first visit. That extra step is part of clinician-guided care, and it's one reason guests across Northern Kentucky and Greater Cincinnati trust us with their wellness routines.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I just take an oral NR supplement instead?
Many people do, and most research has studied oral NR. Our team can explain how IV and injection formats differ so you can decide what fits.
Does Niagen reverse aging?
No. Niagen may support cellular energy and healthy aging. It does not reverse aging or treat any condition.
Are there side effects?
Studies reported NR was generally well tolerated; some people report mild symptoms like nausea or flushing. Talk with your provider about your situation.
